Landscape Architecture & Stewardship
Mastering the
living structure.
Engineering and stewarding exceptional grounds for estates across the Hudson Valley & Connecticut. We do not just plant; we structure the earth.

A landscape is not a static installation. It is a biological system requiring architectural intent and patient, systemic stewardship.
We reject the industry standard of “mow and blow” maintenance and instant-gratification planting. Real gardens are engineered from the subsoil up. Our practice marries structural hardscape design with rigorous horticultural science.
When we take on a property, we measure success in decades. Whether managing mature woodlands or designing formal terraces, our objective is to create grounded, enduring environments that appreciate in beauty and complexity every season.
Complete mastery over the built and living environment.
Landscape Architecture
Comprehensive spatial planning, hardscape engineering, and site-specific planting schemes tailored to local soil ecology.
Horticultural Installation
Expert sourcing, heavy soil conditioning, and precise installation of mature trees, shrubs, and perennials.
Grounds Stewardship
Patient, systemic management of established gardens. Structural pruning, soil biology, and plant health care.
Arboriculture
Canopy management, structural pruning, and the long-term preservation of mature trees and woodland borders.
Irrigation Engineering
Weather-responsive, sub-surface systems designed to drive deep root growth rather than surface dependency.
Seasonal Succession
The exact choreography of planting to ensure estates maintain structural and botanical interest across all four seasons.
The calendar of the earth.
Soil preparation, division, and establishing the structural framework for the year ahead.
- ✦Structural pruning of dormant trees
- ✦Lifting and dividing perennials
- ✦Mulching and soil biology conditioning
- ✦First formal turf edging
Estates under management.
The Walled Garden at Oakhaven
Total hardscape restoration and soil remediation of a neglected two-acre enclosure. We stripped the depleted topsoil, introduced 40 tons of organic matter, and engineered a structural layout to support a vast, naturalistic planting scheme.
Highfield Prairie & Woodlands
Transitioning five acres of resource-heavy lawn into a resilient, ecologically productive meadow framed by mature oaks. The ongoing management requires precise timing for the annual cut and constant botanical monitoring.

“True landscaping is not the imposition of a picture onto the ground; it is the management of biological forces over time.”
Our field team consists exclusively of educated horticulturalists and craftsmen. We do not deploy general laborers. When our trucks arrive at a gate, they carry individuals who understand soil microbiology, hydraulic engineering, and structural pruning. We bring absolute seriousness to the care of your land.

Season Programs
Commission a consultation.
To begin a relationship with Thornwell, we walk the grounds together. We assess the topography, the existing ecology, and the architectural goals of the owner to build a comprehensive proposal.
Programs begin at $4,500 seasonally.
